Patrick studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and graduated in 1974. He was made a fellow of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in 2001 His first theatre score was written in 1978, and subsequently Patrick has written the music for a host of other theatre, radio, television and film productions.

In 1987, Patrick joined the Renaissance Theatre Company as composer and musical director. During this time he completed a British tour of a number of productions for high profile directors such as Sir Derek Jacobi, Geraldine McEwan and Dame Judi Dench.

In 1989 director Kenneth Branagh commissioned Patrick to write the original score for the Renaissance Film Company production of Henry V. The song 'Non Nobis Domine', from the film, was awarded the 1989 Ivor Novello Award for Best Film Theme.

In 1990, HRH The Prince of Wales commissioned Patrick to write 'The Thistle and The Rose', a song cycle for Soprano and Choir, in honour of the Queen Mother's 90th birthday. During that year he also composed the original score for the Disney feature Shipwrecked.

In 1991, Patrick composed the Golden Globe nominated score for the box office number 1 Dead Again for Paramount Pictures directed by Kenneth Branagh. Patrick has continued to work with Kenneth Branagh on a great many highly successful productions including:

Frankenstein (starring Robert De Niro)
The Samuel Goldywn & Renaissance Film Much Ado About Nothing, the musical
Love´s Labour´s Lost, As You Like It and the four-hour epic adaptation of Hamlet, for which Patrick was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Score.

Patrick has also worked extensively with director Regis Wargnier, and received two Cesar nominations for both the Oscar winning Indochine and the Academy Award nominated East West. With Regis Patrick has also scored Man to Man (starring Joseph Feinnes) which opened the 2005 Berlin Film Festival and most recently Pars Vite et Reviens Tard which topped the box office in France in 2007.

Other highly prestigious projects have included working with illustrious directors such as Brian De Palma on Carlito´s Way. Alphonso Cuaron on A Little Princess for which he received the Los Angeles Critics Award and Great Expectations (starring Gwyneth Paltrow). Ang Lee on the Oscar winning Sense and Sensibility for which Patrick received Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations in the 'Best Original Score´ categories.

In 2001 Patrick completed the score for the hugely successful British comedy Bridget Jones´ Diary (Starring Renee Zellweger). His success continued when he was commissioned by the legendary director Robert Altman to score his Oscar winning picture Gosford Park.

In 2003 he scored the multi-award winning comedy Calendar Girls (written by Tim Firth.) Patrick has enjoyed huge worldwide box office success with Working Title's children's smash Nanny Mcphee (starring Emma Thompson), Eragon (starring John Malkovich) and the universally popular franchise Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Directed by Mike Newell.) Patrick teamed up once more in 2007 with the director Kenneth Branagh on his highly acclaimed film Sleuth (written by the Nobel Prize Winning Harold Pinter and starring Jude Law and Michael Caine).

In October 2007 Patrick Doyle's Music from the Movies sell out concert on behalf of The Leukaemia Research Fund was staged at The Royal Albert Hall. It was Directed by Kenneth Branagh and starred a host of international stars such as: Emma Thompson, Sir Derek Jacobi, Dame Judi Dench, Alan Rickman, Imelda Staunton and Robbie Coltrane among many others.

In 2008 Patrick completed the worldwide hit Nim's Island (directed by Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett) and the animated feature Igor (directed by Tony Leondis).

Patrick is currently working on a series of albums. Two for solo piano and one for string quartet.
